Dermaplaning has been around for years. It has recently resurfaced as a method of exfoliation. Unlike the at-home face shaving kits, dermaplaning removes the outermost layer of skin, along with impurities, leaving the healthy skin underneath.
Skin cells die and shed themselves every few weeks. As we get older the process of cell turnover slows down. The result can appear as wrinkles, large clogged pores, uneven or dull complexion. Exfoliation is used to remove the layer of dead skin cells that have collected on the surface of the skin. Some exfoliation methods are harsh and can further damage skin that is prone to scarring. Dermaplaning is aggressive but does not scar the face if performed by an experienced medical provider.
A member of our medical team will put a solution on the face to cleanse the skin. It will also remove all the oil from the surface of the skin. Dry skin is easier to remove. Once this step is complete, and the face is completely dry, the medical staff member will retrieve a sterile 10-gauge scalpel. They will hold the blade at a 45-degree angle and scrape away the dead skin and vellus hair, also known as peach fuzz.
The procedure does not take very long to complete and it involves little to no discomfort. Results are noticeable immediately and can last from 4-6 weeks. This is an aggressive exfoliation, but there is no downtime or time needed to heal. The skin is not compromised in any way.
It is a great idea to have a dermaplaning session prior to other treatments like peels or infusion therapies. Removing the top layer of skin will allow the other treatments to penetrate the deeper layers more easily. It may lessen the number of visits needed for the other procedures.
